# how to make nitric acid

Question:How can I make nitric acid at home without fancy equipment and with things you can find at a local supermarket? You don't need to know why I'm doing this. The world is not in danger from me, I'm not about to commit a hostile takeover, I just want to know how I can make nitric acid at home. The important thing is I must be able to either find the necessary ingredients/equipment at home and/or a local supermarket at a reasonable price.

Answers:I dont know how to make it but if i had it id try to make nitro glycerin.

Question:Can you pass the nitrous oxide through water and form nitrous acid, then wait for it to decompose into nitric acid? would that work? is there any other way?

Question:my book wont tell me. in science

Answers:Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, which enter the air via automobile emissions (among other things), combine with water droplets in the atmosphere to form simple acids. Your textbook or a Google search should be able to point you towards a more detailed description of the individual reactions. It should be noted, however, that natural rainwater is weakly acidic, having a pH of around 5.5 or so. This is due to pure rainwater mixing with CO2 in the atmosphere and forming a weak carbonic acid solution. Generally speaking, so-called "acid rain" usually refers to rainwater having a lower pH than natural rainwater, as a result of sulfur and nitrogen compounds attributed to human pollution (but these compounds can also be introduced to the atmosphere by natural processes, such as volcanic eruptions). Here's a link, 2nd from the top on a Google search for "acid rain." Many details inside. http://www.epa.gov/acidrain/

Question:acid to make a 3M solution of nitric acid?

Answers:the dilution equation: C1V1 = C1 V2 (16M)(37.5ml) = (3M ) (V2) V2 = 200 ml if you dilute 37.5 ml of your stock ssolution up to 200 ml ,... it will be 3 Molar your answer is add 162.5 ml of water
