Question:What is the lateral height of a cone that is 40 at the base and 72 as the height. Also, how do you find the area of the cross section if you cut it from top to bottom. What is the percent decrease in energy consumption from 3510 kw to 1297 kw?
Answers:Diameter of cone = 40 whatevers [units of measurement should have been given to you] So Radius of cone = 20 Height of cone = 72 The lateral height is the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle with the other sides being 20 and 72 So hypotenuse ^2 = 20^2 + 72^2 So lateral height = (20^2 + 72^2) = 74.7 (to nearest tenth) The area of the cross section is triangular with base 40 and perp ht 72 So area of cross section = (1/2) x 40 x 72 = 1440 square whatevers Decrease in energy consumption = 3510 1297 = 2213 kw Percentage decrease = [(amount of decrease) (amount of original consumption)] x 100% =(2213 / 3510) x 100 % = 63.05% (to nearest hundredth of a percent)
