Triple bond

A triple bond in chemistry is a chemical bond between two chemical elements involving six bonding electrons instead of the usual two in a covalent single bond. The most common triple bond, that between two carbon atoms, can be found in alkynes. Other functional groups containing a triple bond are cyanides and isocyanides. Some diatomic molecules, such as dinitrogen and carbon monoxide are also triple bonded. In skeletal formula the triple bond is drawn as three parallel lines between the two connected atoms.

Triple bonds are stronger than single bonds or double bonds and they are also shorter. The bond order is three.

The type of bonding can be explained in terms of orbital hybridization. In the case of acetylene each carbon atom has two sp orbitals and two p-orbitals. The two sp orbitals are linear with 180° angles and occupy the x-axis (cartesian coordinate system). The p-orbitals are perpendicular on the y-axis and the z-axis. When the carbon atoms approach each other the sp orbitals overlap to form a sp-sp sigma bond. At the same time the pz-orbitals approach and together they form a pz-pzpi-bond. Likewise, the other pair of py-orbitals form a py-py pi-bond. The result is formation of one sigma bond and two pi bonds.

In bent bond theory the triple bond can also formed by the overlapping of three sp3 lobes without the need to invoke a pi-bond.

Question:Peace and Thank You for Answering!! :)

Answers:The most common type of covalent bond is the single bond, the sharing of only one pair of electrons between two atoms. It usually consists of one sigma bond. All bonds with more than one shared pair are called multiple bonds. Sharing two pairs is called a double bond. An example is in ethylene (between the carbon atoms). It usually consists of one sigma bond and one pi bond. Sharing three pairs is called a triple bond. An example is in hydrogen cyanide (between C and N). It usually consists of one sigma bond and two pi-bonds.

Question:a. shows the kinds and numbers present in a molecule of a compound b. chemical formula that shows the arrangement of atoms in molecules and polyatomic ions c. a covalent bond between two atoms of different electronegativities in which the bonding electrons are not shared equally d. interaction caused by the motion of electrons e. a covalent bond formed by the equal sharing of bonding electrons by two atoms f. a covalent bond involving two pairs of electrons; each atom donates one pair of electrons to the bond g. a covalent bond in which three pairs of electrons are shared by two bonded atoms h. substance in which all of the atoms are covalently bonded to each other i. a covalent bond between two atoms in which the shared electron pair comes from only of the atoms j. force that occurs when a hydrogen atom that is covalently bonded o a very electronegative atom is also weakly bonded to an unshared pair of electrons in the same or a nearly molecule

Answers:g. covalent bond is where the atoms are bonded together by sharing electrons (key word: sharing). a triple bond is drawn with 3 lines connecting two atoms. Ex., two nitrogen atoms bonded together create a triple covalent bond.
