Question:The definition of dilation in geometry is : Dilation is a similarity transformation in which a figure is enlarged or reduced using a scale factor 0, without altering the center. When you want to dilate a coordinate, you take the cooardinate and multiply by the scale factor. However, what if you do want to change the altering center? How do you perform dilation then?

Question:Four points on a graph (rectangle) P=6,3 D=2,3 B=6,9 C=2,9 I need to dilate the figure by the given scale factor of 0.5 with "P" as the center of dilation. How do you do that? I keep multiplying those coordiates by 0.5 and I don't get a rectangle. Help!
Answers:First Draw it out. The rectangle is a 4 x 6 rectangle. Now using P as the point of dilation. Multiply the side lengths by 0.5, not the coordinate points. This makes the rectangle now 2 x 3. Shift Points D and C to the right (xplane) by 2, and shift C and B down (yplane) by 3. Therefore: P: (6,3)  stays the same D: (2,3) > (4,3) C: (2,9) > (4,6) B: (6,9) > (6,6)
