Question:I have limp, very fine hair. When I shampoo it, it becomes very brittle and often breaks off, even when I'm only gently de-tangling it. Conversely, conditioning it makes it feel heavy and lifeless, and it immediately feels "dirty" to me only a few hours later. I've noticed that when I shampoo my hair without using conditioner, and wash only with water the next few times I shower, the texture improves and it gains more volume. I'm curious about the advantages of washing hair only every few weeks, is it true that not shampooing and allowing my hair's natural oils to take over can give my hair more volume? I'm willing to try it, but I'm also a person who is quite clean, and I'm worried about the "grossness" factor, although I've heard that it's no where near as bad as most people would initially think. Is there any thing I can use as a substitute for shampooing and conditioning, that will keep my hair odor-free and relatively clean looking? Has anyone had experience with going without shampoo for 6 weeks?

Answers:your hairs natural oils is the best thing for your hair; try shampoo/conditioning your hair every other day and if it can handle the oils (which most thin hair cant; it shows through very fast that it hasnt been washed) every 2 days. if you decide not to shampoo/condition your hair; do not wet it in the shower either. pin it up or use a showercap. the water mixing with the natural oils will weigh your hair down more even after it dries. you are probably going to have to buy more expensive shampoo bought from a salon rather than in a regular store. nioxin is good but ive heard very very good things about Aveda for thin hair. i believe its an all natural shampoo but i havent heard any complaints about it at all! they also have this powder/potion thing that you put into your hair, it helps with volume and helps with the natural oils to keep your hair looking nice and not weighed down. i say try that one and see how it works out for you. try not to blow dry your hair as heat will contribute to the breakage! when you dry your hair after a shower pat dry it till its damp and let it air dry. dont ring it or keep it in the towel. if youre going to use hair products; use light ones. and dont use them often. there are also hair cuts great for thin hair and styles to help with the volume. talk to a professional salon. not supercuts or fantastic sams. but the salons that charge about $65-80 for a cut. CALL BEFORE HAND and ask if they give consultations. your hair is gentle; it needs all the attention it can get to be treated properly! you dont have to keep going back to the same salon, but they will give you advice and tell you how to take care of your hair and give you all the time you need to answer all of your questions better than a regular hair cutting place. they're like hair nurses/doctors. as for substitutes for shampoo/conditioner there are a lot of natural home remedies you can use to enrich your hair starting first with your diet. eat lots of leafy greens and protein rich foods. im sure if you look online youll see directions and ingredients to make a "at home" shampoo. but also if your town has an old apothecary they carry natural shampoos and conditioners you can buy! long i know; but i hope it was informative and helped in some way. good luck!

Question:

Answers:Pro, It really gets your hair clean and you can use very small amounts. Con, Causticity, It really dries out your hair and skin as it will more readily wash away the lanolin. Unless you have really oily skin I'd say stick with pH neutral products.

Question:

Answers:Sodium will break down oils in your hair. same disadvantage.

Question:There are 3 brands of shampoo that I am looking into getting....I would like to narrow it down to just one. I've used every drugstore shampoo out there, and nothing seems to work that good for me. So... Bumble & Bumble Aveda Redken what are the advantages and disadvantages of these brands? Do they smell good? Price wise? My hair is long, and it's color treated, although I am no longer dying my hair and don't plan on it any time soon. Right now, it's not at it's healthiest, so I would probably need something for dry/damaged hair. Thanks guys!

Answers:Redken is my favorite. It has many different lines, there are different shampoos, cond and stylers for any type of hair. The All Soft line would be good for you as well as a treatment that they make called Extreme. It smells pretty good. Bumble and Bumble smells great but I dont know much about their products, I have mouse and hairspray from them that works well. The salon products will be more expensive, but I think they are worth it. Good luck
