Question:My organic chem lab on webassign is asking what the boiling point of acetone is. I have tried 56.53, 50.5, and 53 and it has counted all of them wrong.

Answers:For ace toneThe first and third C are Sp3 so its tetrahedral the C on the second is a Sp2 so its trigonal planer b) Hmm bit of a trick quesiton actone has a slight polar movement from the second carbon to the oxgyen atom. But if you have a mirror down the middle of the C=O bond the dipole on the first and third carbons are the same and hence there is no dipole movement in this direction. c) Long time since I did this, the oxygen on actone will have a slight atttraction to another second carbon on another actone compound due to dipole dipole forces. d) 1-propanol has less simarilty and the hydroxy group can undergo hydrogen bonding with other 1-propanol groups this causes an increase in the boiling pt when compaired to acetone. Plus with the hydroxy group being at one end of the compound the dipole movement is much greater than that of acetone as. Th
