The CBSE board has introduced open text-based assessments for classes 9 and 11. When one hears the word “open text,” people may mistake it for open book exams which are prevalent in the US and in other countries. The CBSE open text-based assessments (OTBA) are not exactly open-book exams. They do, however, encourage critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, going beyond the text, research, doing case studies and group discussions. The English literature and poetry that students study in school help them to empathize with humanity. In fact, accomplished writers pour out their hearts, souls and minds with immense passion and sensitivity. Also, the study of English including literature and poetry helps students become more original and communicate with greater profundity. In the past, English, like all the other subjects, was taught with the push to merely pass exams rather than to truly become wise communicators. Also, sometimes, it is necessary to study English in a more … Continue reading
Open Text-Based Assessment (OTBA) has been introduced by the CBSE board to help enhance thinking and innovation skills in students. The Open-Text Based Assessment was conducted for classes 9 and 11 in March 2014. It will again be conducted in March 2015. The main goal of conducting open text-based assessment is to move away from rote learning and to help students improve research and thinking skills. In the Open-Text Based Assessment conducted by CBSE, “open text materials” for classes 9 and 11 are prescribed and provided well in advance. OTBA conducted by CBSE may seem like a misnomer. One may think that an open book-kind of assessment means that one can refer to books and other reference material while undergoing an assessment. This is what happens in most open book assessments in the US and other countries. The Open-Text Based … Continue reading
