Subjects in the commerce stream

Commerce stream is mostly considered as an option for those who are comfortable with mathematics or those who have a family background of accountants. For some it is also a preferred choice because of the subjects therein. Subjects in the commerce stream are simple and easy to understand and recall, as compared to the subjects in the science stream.  Commerce stream is all about the basic mathematical functions and the appropriate use of them in the accounts. It is therefore easy compared to the other subjects.

Choosing a career stream requires a lot of thought and research and cannot be done overnight. For anyone who is interested in the commerce stream, the subjects that will be available are – mathematics, computer science, statistics, business studies, accountancy, management accounts, economics, history etc. You will have a combination of any of these subjects in your class 11 and 12, which will be a base for your future career choices.

With many combinations to choose from, students start their preparation for their career from Class 11. Towards the end of class 12, students are faced with yet another decision making – choosing B.Com or BBA. B.Com and BBA both have a few similar subjects with only 1 or 2 subjects being different. B.Com is the most commonly opted course for students in this stream.

  1. B.Com – this is a graduate course spanning 3 years during which students can take up CA foundation course. On completion of this course, students can directly get into the CA course without the CPT test. CA is not the only professional course available for commerce students. ICWA and Law are other professional courses that can be a choice for commerce students. MBA is a master level education program that helps students’ in building their skills on management along with accounting.
  2. BBA – this is also a 3 year course which was bought into existence with a view to help students from the business background to build their skills on the important aspects of business and entrepreneurship. Many students took fancy to this course because of their balance in management and accounting. MBA is a course which students can follow upon after BBA.

While commerce students can take up either BBA or B.Com, they can also choose to graduate in the Arts stream, which gives more opportunities to explore.
